Glutton For Punishment

I woke up this morning not wanting to get out of bed.  It took everything in me not to go back to sleep.  Not good, considering I went to bed around 10:00 and had almost 9 hours of sleep.  To me that was a telltale sign of what my day could end up being like if I did not shake myself out of this rut.  What better way to head off laziness than to go for a run? But, not my average 3-4 mile run, but a 6 miles!  With anticipation of going on a long run, I felt more energized and I put on my running gear and laced up my Adidas.

Once I was out on the road, it felt great.  I took a new route and ran through neighborhood that I haven’t run through before.  The change of scenery was nice, coupled with the crisp morning weather made for a fantastic run.

How do you jump-start your day when your feeling sluggish?

My 96 Year-Old Running Inspiration

So… I’m flipping through the November issue of Vogue magazine when I came across the ‘letters from the readers’ section and a picture of two African-American women running catches my attention.  Not because they are running on the beach (which I love to do), but because there is an older woman who looks to be around 70 right in stride with the younger woman.  I read the caption: “Ida Keeling with her daughter Shelly”, which make me even more interested to find out more about her.  So I continue to the reader’s letters, and apparently Mrs. Keeling is 96 years old!!! Yep, 96, AND a world record holder in the 60 meter sprint.

The Vogue Article, Runs in the The Family features Mrs. Keeling who, coached by her 60 year-old-daughter, started running at the great age of 67.  I have always prayed and asked God to give me the strength to continue running until the day that I die.  I have blogged several times before about my love, enjoyment, and need to run.  I cannot imagine how my life would be if I could not run.  Ida Keeling is a true testament to what anyone can do regardless of age, physicality, or obstacles when they truly set their mind to it.

Meltdown Avoided

I almost had one today.  Thankfully, Mrs. Burch and Mr. Run came to my rescue.  For various reasons I was feeling frustrated, and out-of-sorts.  I’m not sure if it had anything to do with it raining for two days straight, good old hormones, or just plain craziness, but I wasn’t in a great place today….not horribly bad, but not great either.  Defense is the best offense, so I went shopping and then for a short run.  Thanks to 25% off at Tory Burch I brought the Amanda double snap wallet.  I saw it last month while searching for a new wallet.  Today I figured I couldn’t pass up the 25% off since the sale ends tomorrow.

When I returned home, I was still feeling somewhat antsy, so I went for short two miler.  It felt good to get outside after two days of rain . During my run I listened to the Millionaire Next Door (great book, if you haven’t read it).  I normally read books on my iPad, but I’m starting to jump on the  Audio Book craze that my husband is sooo hooked on. I hardly ever listen to the local radio station anymore, so the Audio Book app fills that void.

Marriage is Like Running

As long as I can remember I’ve been a runner.  As a child I loved running and racing, and now as an adult I couldn’t imagine enjoying anything more except for being married.  Running is hard, very hard a times.  It’s much more mental for me than most would believe.  The night before, I mentally set precedence for the mileage I will run the next day.  If I’m feeling tired, then I mentally calculate how I will feel the next day during my run, and thus set a mileage goal.  The same goes with being married.  I decide if I want to get an attitude about something, or if I want to approach my husband as an adult and tell him what’s bothering me…it’s all mental.

Sometimes, I will have my mind-set on something, like what I think we should or shouldn’t do as a couple.  Then a funny thing will happen, just like during a run I realize, I have sold myself short.  Instead of only doing 3 miles, I feel good enough to continue and push through to 5 miles.  Instead of being one tracked and thinking I know best all the time, I realize I have actually limited our growth as a couple because I was too stubborn to see past me.  During those times, I reset my thinking to that which is essential to our goals as a couple and my growth as a wife.

So you see, for me running/marriage are both very similar.   They are repetitive, pleasurable, and with practice you get better over time.  Running/marriage feel great on good days, sometimes painful on those occasional ‘not so good’ days, and just right on those ‘in between’ days.  But I stay focused and continue to progress as a wife and as a runner, because they are a part of who I am, what I love, and what I believe in.

Rain Rain Go Away… It’s Thursday!

I was so excited about my run this morning.  The weather was a nice 65 degrees, and slightly overcast. When I checked my Weather.com app I saw that there was a 60% chance of showers.  Upon further inspection of the weather map, I didn’t see any rain moving my way, so I headed out for a five-run.  My run started out great.  My legs felt fresh which was surprising since, for the past two weeks, I have been doing two workouts a day five days a week.  I was flying, at an 8:45/mile pace!

Can you believe 2.5 miles into the run it starts to down pour.  I’m not talking about sprinkles or drizzle. I’m talking about having to take my iPhone out of my armband and tuck it into my sports bar type of downpour.  😦  Boy, I wish I someone was recording that!  I was freaking sprinting, which made the ran whip my face even harder.  I would have stopped, but there was nowhere to stop.  No corner store, no shelter, only houses that sit off the road down long driveways.  So… I kept running.  I had a few cars honk their horns.  Probably because of the phone in my bra that kept bouncing up and down. smh

All in all it was a great run, and the beginning of a beautiful Thursday for me.  From now on, I will make sure I actually take heed of the forecast.

PS. I was going to wash my hair today anyway 🙂

Friday’s Random Rants

Because we were in Houston for a for days I had to catchup on my coursework, thus I haven’t posted a blog. Today I posting a few random events that occurred the past few days.
(I’m typing this on my WordPress app as I drive to the mall to buy Dr. B’s Xmas present.. Do not try this at home 🙂

We accumulated enough Hilton Honors points for two free nights, which were going to use for our stay in Jacksonville during Christmas (cha ching)

I did Billy Blank’s Tae Bo cardio workout yesterday, and he didn’t beat me down as bad as he did last week.

The cold weather killed all of my annuals despite the fact that we covered them up. It was such a sad sight to see… I pulled them up yesterday.

Today I ran 4.5 miles in 45 min. Certainly not my best time, but it felt good to be out running in the sun and fresh air.

Yesterday I went to my chiropractor. I have a nagging pain in my upper back near my shoulder. The pain got worse last year and I went to her for about six months. The pain comes back occasionally so I decided to start back OMG you should have heard my back and neck popping it sounded like the Fourth of July, but I felt like someone gave me a new body 😉

Tomorrow Dr. B and I are volunteering at a Christmas toy give away. Last year we helped organize all the toys, this year we will actually help hand them out.

Were having custom Christmas cards made and I just ordered them yesterday. Needless to say I had to pay extra for express shipping. I’m not looking forward to standing in a long arse line at the post office, but that’s exactly what it’s going to come down to because I procrastinated 😦

Lastly, I’m a lipgloss girl. I prefer Nars. But for the past week I found myself using the red Loreal lipstick the makeup artist who did my makeup for my wedding gave to me. I really love how it looks with my complexion.

I hate going to the mall during the holidays…it’s insane!

I can’t believe how hot it is today, 70 degrees, after days of 30’s and 40’s.

I’m at the mall now, and I found a parking space on my first go around!!!

I took this while I was running!

Today I went for a long run on the West Orange Trail.  I completed 7 miles in 1 hour and 8 minutes!  I’m trying to work my way up to 10 miles, so that I can run the Gate River run in March.  It’s a 15k or 9.33 miles.  I ran it once before in 2008, I’ determined to run it in 2011.  The run felt good, except for the last 1.5 miles.  I legs felt like I was running through mud 😦
