I Got the Gift

It’s your birthday,
but I’m the lucky woman
who got to be with you for another year.
It’s your birthday, and the older you get,
the more wonderful you become.

It’s your birthday,
and I’m privileged to share the years with you.
It’s your birthday, and each year
I find the depth of my love for you growing.

It’s your birthday, and I look forward with joy
to each day we spend together.
It’s your birthday, and I wonder how I got along
for all the birthdays I didn’t know you.

It’s your birthday, and it’s amazing
how easy and enjoyable it is to be with you each day.
It’s your birthday, and no matter what fate has in store for us,
I know it will be a pleasure to spend life with you.

It’s your birthday, but I got the gift–
You in my life for another year.

Your Wife,

What it Means to be a Husband

30 Jun

I’m soooooo excited today as I have my first guest writer on Natasha the Newlywed *does a little jig* It’s none other than my brother Jamal,(check out his blog) who himself is also a  newlywed( as of April 24th).  With great pride I asked him to write about what it means to him to be a husband.  So, baby bro take it away….

Guest writer, Jamal Baker

My sister asked me to be a guest writer for her blog Natasha the Newlywed. I’m more than honored to write about what it means to me to be a husband(I’ve only been married for two months). To be honest with you, when I think of my title as a “husband”, I feel a sense of pride, because as tradition has it, I’m the head of a household. When something goes wrong or needs to be fixed it’s my responsibility to make it right, because as the man of the house all “eyes” will be on me.

Being a husband is also a humbling experience.  Humbling in that I met and married a woman who believes that I’m the only man she wants to spend the rest of her life with.  It’s humbling because regardless of the mistakes that I’ve made in the past, she has loved me through them all.

I put it in the perspective that out of ALL the guys that she’s ever met and will try to hit on her meet; I am the one that she decided that she could have the best relationship and life with.  Most men won’t admit it, but it gives men a sense of pride to be able to say your “married, and off the market”, but I will say it with much pride and happiness.

To me, being a husband means that I’m turned the corner to manhood.  Were no longer boyfriend and girlfriend.  Were no longer in a temporary state of living together.  I no longer have the option to leave if things get hectic.  Were married and that means till death do us part.  It takes a man to live up to a life long commitment such as marriage.  I know many young couples that have been together and aren’t married. I’m proud that were NOT be one of those couples.

Lastly, it’s oftentimes the little things that identify me as a married, ignites a sparkle inside of me. For example filling out forms and checking “married”; seeing my  “married” status on Facebook, being called “Mr. and Mrs. Baker”, or being asked “how’s the wife?”  Those are the little things that about married life that make me happy.   But, the biggest joy is having a wonderful woman in my life that I can to claim as my wife.

So in closing, I say to everybody, if you are with somebody that you truly love, and you feel like they are the one – get married.  For those couples, there’s no logical reason to NOT be married.   Marriage is a wonderful unity between two people who love and care for each other.  I love you Suwanda Baker, and it means the world to me, that you chose me as your husband.

Readers, what does it mean a husband or wife…I’d love to hear your thoughts.
