What does it mean to be a wife? I mean, I know that is the question I should be answering, but daily I struggle with a definite definition of the word *wife*. On Monday I may be the supportive wife, on Tuesday I may be a “ride or die” wife 🙂 , and on Wednesday I might just be the attentive wife… etc. Being a wife comes with a lot of responsibilities. I am grateful to have someone who trusts in me to be able to handle those responsibilities while remaining sane, rational, and humble.

How does being a wife feel? Honestly, I tell many people that it feels well… legal. My husband and I chose to live together before we got married. Once we started setting up joint accounts, and planning for major purchases together, we realized that it was definitely time to move or relationship forward towards marriage. Marriage is a commitment that many people are afraid to make, because it is (and should be) a permanent, til death do us part, commitment. Being his wife makes me feel secure in regards to our relationship, and it is definitely a blessing to have found someone who cares about me for me.

Being a wife is such an extraordinary experience.  At night as I lay in bed, it feels really good just knowing there is someone laying next to me who feels safe and secure enough to share his deepest thoughts with me. Being a wife is one of the greatest joys that I have experienced thus far in my life.   I am proud to say I’m Bobby “Mal” Baker’s wife all day, every day, and forever…

What it Means to be a Husband

30 Jun

I’m soooooo excited today as I have my first guest writer on Natasha the Newlywed *does a little jig* It’s none other than my brother Jamal,(check out his blog) who himself is also a  newlywed( as of April 24th).  With great pride I asked him to write about what it means to him to be a husband.  So, baby bro take it away….

Guest writer, Jamal Baker

My sister asked me to be a guest writer for her blog Natasha the Newlywed. I’m more than honored to write about what it means to me to be a husband(I’ve only been married for two months). To be honest with you, when I think of my title as a “husband”, I feel a sense of pride, because as tradition has it, I’m the head of a household. When something goes wrong or needs to be fixed it’s my responsibility to make it right, because as the man of the house all “eyes” will be on me.

Being a husband is also a humbling experience.  Humbling in that I met and married a woman who believes that I’m the only man she wants to spend the rest of her life with.  It’s humbling because regardless of the mistakes that I’ve made in the past, she has loved me through them all.

I put it in the perspective that out of ALL the guys that she’s ever met and will try to hit on her meet; I am the one that she decided that she could have the best relationship and life with.  Most men won’t admit it, but it gives men a sense of pride to be able to say your “married, and off the market”, but I will say it with much pride and happiness.

To me, being a husband means that I’m turned the corner to manhood.  Were no longer boyfriend and girlfriend.  Were no longer in a temporary state of living together.  I no longer have the option to leave if things get hectic.  Were married and that means till death do us part.  It takes a man to live up to a life long commitment such as marriage.  I know many young couples that have been together and aren’t married. I’m proud that were NOT be one of those couples.

Lastly, it’s oftentimes the little things that identify me as a married, ignites a sparkle inside of me. For example filling out forms and checking “married”; seeing my  “married” status on Facebook, being called “Mr. and Mrs. Baker”, or being asked “how’s the wife?”  Those are the little things that about married life that make me happy.   But, the biggest joy is having a wonderful woman in my life that I can to claim as my wife.

So in closing, I say to everybody, if you are with somebody that you truly love, and you feel like they are the one – get married.  For those couples, there’s no logical reason to NOT be married.   Marriage is a wonderful unity between two people who love and care for each other.  I love you Suwanda Baker, and it means the world to me, that you chose me as your husband.
